Pictures of meerkats in all sorts of poses, displaying their characteristic lookout behaviour, eating food, playing and digging. Images include adults and also younger little meerkat babies.
The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) is a lively little animal that belongs to the mongoose family. These small mammals grow only about 25 to 30 cms long and generally live in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, the Namib Desert and in South Africa.
My daughter and I saw these delightful meerkats at the popular free range Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo in N.S.W. which we visited in late January 2013 while waiting for the flood waters in northern N.S.W and south east Queensland to subside, so we could safely return home to the Gold Coast.
We greatly appreciate –
- the opportunity to spend an entire day at Taronga Zoo in Dubbo,
- the comfortable accommodation we found nearby with really tasty buffet breakfast,
- the dedicated zoo keepers, carers and staff, especially Karen Ellis who stood patiently while we took these photographs.
